Los Angeles police are investigating a burglary at Paris Hilton’s home they say left her bedroom ransacked and about $2 million in jewelry missing.Los Angeles police Officer Julianne Sohn said the break-in occurred around 5 a.m. Friday at Hilton’s home in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles. Sohn says detectives report that a man wearing a hooded sweat shirt and gloves broke in through the home’s front door and ransacked Hilton’s bedroom.Hilton was not home during the early morning burglary, said Richard French, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. The burglary was reported by a security guard at Hilton’s gated Los Angeles community, French said.

A French court has ordered a clothing firm to pay $56,200 in damages for distributing bags bearing a nude image of France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.The photo dates from Bruni-Sarkozy’s modeling days. She was seeking damages from clothing vendor Pardon, which distributed the bags to its clients."The unauthorized use of the image of Carla Bruni caused her moral and economic damage," the court said on Thursday.Pardon said it will appeal the ruling handed down by a court on the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, where the company is based. She was charged with failure to produce a valid California license following a car crash in the state last year, but the case was declared a mistrial on Tuesday after a jury failed to reach a unanimous decision.The judge was forced to dismiss any criminal charges against the singer as jurors deadlocked - with two members voting guilty, and 10 not guilty.But despite the relative victory, Spears’ lawyer has revealed how the star pleaded with him to excuse her from making a court appearance - and insists she wasn’t "strong" enough to cope with the pressure.Flanagan recalls how Spears told him: "I can’t face all those people. A wild ride that led to Lindsay Lohan’s arrest has sparked another lawsuit.Court records show that three men who claim they were in a sport utility vehicle that Lohan commandeered in July 2007 sued her last week. Their allegations include battery, false imprisonment and that the actress was negligent when she allegedly took over an SUV belonging to one of the men to chase her recently fired assistant.That chase ended when the assistant’s mother called police because she was being followed and led Lohan toward a police station. Officers suspected Lohan was drunk and arrested her. Lohan eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of being under the influence of cocaine stemming from the Santa Monica arrest and an earlier drunken driving arrest in Beverly Hills. She served 84 minutes in jail and entered rehab.Lohan’s attorney, Ed McPherson, called the lawsuit "absurd."He claimed the men were having fun during the chase and questioned why they waited more than a year to file suit. "It just doesn’t make sense," McPherson said. "They had ample opportunity to get out of the car."It’s three guys who want to get a lot of headlines," he said, "and want to make some money."An attorney for the men, identified as Ronnie Blake, Jakon Sutter and Dante Nigro, had said last year he hoped to avoid filing a lawsuit against Lohan. McPherson said there were some early talks, but no settlement was reached.The case will be heard in Santa Monica, where Lohan is also being sued for emotional distress by a woman who was in the car that was being chased by Lohan.The lawsuit seeks more than $25,000 in damages for the three men.

A mistrial was declared in Britney Spears’ driving-without-a-license case sparing her a criminal record.The jury’s deadlock could not be broken, even after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Steele permitted prosecution and defense attorneys to make additional closing arguments.Spears came close to bucking the matter altogether: The jury’s final vote was 10-2 in favor of acquittal. A city prosecutor did not immediately indicate whether a retrial would be sought, but a hearing was scheduled to determine whether the case would be pursued further.The jury struggled with the case since resuming deliberations Monday, telling a judge they couldn’t reach an unanimous decision after five votes going back to Friday. Steele thanked jurors for their time and dismissed them.Deliberations lasted longer than the case, which featured only three witnesses and roughly a day’s worth of testimony and arguments.Jurors posed a pair of questions before declaring themselves deadlocked. One sought to clarify the charges against Spears, and whether she should be considered guilty if she possessed a valid Louisiana license, as her attorney has said she did.The other: “Why was she stopped in the first place?” In fact, there was no traffic stop that precipitated the case; she was cited for hit-and-run and driving without a valid California license later, after video of the accident surfaced.Spears’ lawyer Michael Flanagan argued that Spears didn’t meet the state’s residency requirements, and that her Louisiana license was all she needed to drive legally.Defense and prosecution attorneys agreed that Spears was behind the wheel in California in August 2007. That kept jurors from hearing any mention of the hit-and-run — or any narrative elements to explain why she faced a criminal charge.Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Michael Amerian initially put up only one witness and entered one piece of evidence during the trial, showing that Spears did not have a valid California license more than a week after the accident.In all, only three witnesses testified during the case. After Flanagan called Spears’ father to the stand, Amerian introduced signed papers from the singer’s divorce that indicated she had been a California resident since at least 2006.The final witness was a paparazzo who, along with other photographers, tails Spears constantly and said she spends about 80 percent of her time in Los Angeles. Flanagan countered, however, that none of those things required Spears to get a California license.Spears never appeared during the trial. She is in the midst of a comeback, recently earning three MTV Video Music Awards. As her trial started last week, Billboard announced that her new single, “Womanizer,” was No. 1 on its charts.Flanagan repeatedly said Spears had been targeted because of her celebrity status and said she should have been permitted to resolve the case by paying a small fine.After the trial’s conclusion Friday, Amerian said it was Spears who was to blame for the case getting this far. He said his office had offered the singer two deals, one that included probation and another that would require her to pay a $1,000 fine. Both were rejected, he said.He deflected criticism from Flanagan that the case was politically motivated. Amerian plans to run for City Attorney next year, but said Spears was being treated the same as any other driver.He conceded that it is “extremely rare” for a misdemeanor driving without-a-valid-license case to go to trial, and neither he nor Flanagan could cite and example of when it had happened in Los Angeles.

Marilyn Monroe’s biographer has slammed a newly released FBI report that claims she was the victim of a murder conspiracy. Monroe was 36 when she was found lying naked, faced down on her bed at her Brentwood, California home on August 5th 1962. A coroner ruled the cause of death as ‘probable suicide’ by barbiturate poisoning, but many conspiracy theorists believe her rumored affairs had something to do with her unexpected death. Her biographer, Anthony Summers refuses to believe the newly released FBI document, unearthed by Australian filmmaker Phillipe Mora. It claims Monroe was tricked into killing herself by associates who promised she would be rescued in time. Summers, who claims to have had access to the FBI documents over 20 years ago, dismisses the allegations of foul play as unfounded. He says, “I had this document in 1984 when it was first released by the FBI. I had the uncensored version of it the same year. I got it from a private source in California who in turn had been in touch with a man who was eager to lay blame for Monroe’s death at the feet of the Kennedys.”"I didn’t use it because I believed it was full of misguided gibberish and rumor. It’s a shame because there are some real mysteries surrounding Monroe’s death, but I don’t think murder is one of them.”

Angelina Jolie has given birth to a girl and a boy, and dad Brad Pitt took the whole thing in stride. The obstetrician who delivered the twins, Dr. Michel Sussmann, said the babies, Jolie and Pitt “are doing marvelously well.” Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Caesarean section about 8 p.m. Saturday in Nice in southern France. Jolie had a local anesthetic and was conscious throughout, the doctor said. The mother, the babies, the father are doing marvelously well,” he said. Sussmann said the Caesarean was moved forward from its originally planned date “for medical reasons” so the babies could be born “in the best conditions.” The doctor did not give details. He said Jolie is expected to stay in the hospital for a few more days and that she now needs rest. Though the lenses of the world”s paparazzi had been trained on maternity wards across the French Riviera, Jolie managed to slip unobserved into the clinic, reportedly arriving by helicopter on the hospital’s rooftop helipad. Pitt was seen coming and going after Jolie”s hospitalization became public.Paparazzi and curious sightseers gathered outside the hospital in Nice on Sunday, hoping for glimpses and shots of Pitt. Local newspaper, Nice Matin, which first broke news of the birth, reported Sunday that the couple have sold rights for the first photo of their newly enlarged family to an unnamed publication and that the proceeds would go to charity. The first photos of the new twins are expected to bring millions of dollars.

Christie Brinkley’s lurid divorce trial came to an abrupt end when lawyers for her and her husband reached an out-of-court settlement that gives her sole custody of their two children. The settlement was reached after an all-night session that resolved all issues between Brinkley and her estranged husband, architect Peter Cook, Brinkley’s lawyer, Robert Stephan Cohen, told the court. Naomi Campbell has been charged with assaulting two police officers during an alleged luggage rage incident at Heathrow Airport, her lawyer and prosecutors.Campbell was charged when she reported to Heathrow police station for the April 3 incident, her lawyer Simon Nicholls said. The Crown Prosecution Service said Campbell faces six charges, three counts of assaulting a constable, two counts of using threatening, abusive words or behavior to the cabin crew and one count of disorderly conduct. Police said the assault charges related to the two officers. Campbell was ordered to appear at a west London magistrates’ court June 20.Witnesses said Campbell was aboard a British Airways plane due to take off for Los Angeles when she became involved in a dispute over her luggage. Tens of thousands of bags had been mishandled at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 after its chaotic opening in late March. Campbell was removed from the plane and held for eight hours at the airport police station before being released on bail. Her lawyer said she was “bitterly disappointed” that she had been charged.”Prosecutors in this case have decided she needs to be prosecuted in the magistrates court. She respects that decision and she hopes this matter is dealt with expeditiously,” Nicholls said. The assault charges carry a maximum sentence of six months in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000. The other charges are punishable by a fine.

A New York City college student alleges in a lawsuit that Lindsay Lohan was seated next to her at a nightclub and left with her $12,000 mink coat. Maria Markova has sued Lindsay Lohan, claiming she took her mink coat without permission and kept it for more than two weeks. Markova said in a lawsuit that Lohan took the golden sheared mink coat while they were both in a nightclub in January. Eliot Spitzer to resign is suing ‘Girls Gone Wild’ adult video founder Joe Francis for more than $10 million for the illegal use of her name and image. In the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, Dupre contends that she was 17 and not old enough to sign a legally binding contract when she appeared partially nude in video footage filmed in 2003 by members of Francis’ Mantra Films production company in Miami Beach. On a spring break vacation at the time, Dupre was also drunk when she was told to sign a video “release” form, according to the complaint, which seeks damages in excess of $10 million from Francis and his co-defendants.”At the time of these events, plaintiff did not understand the magnitude of her actions nor that her image and likeness would be displayed in videos and DVDs produced and distributed by defendants,” the lawsuit says.”The defendants have profited from the filming, production and distribution and sale of the videos and DVDs,” it added.”Defendants created the false impression that plaintiff has endorsed and/or approves of the graphic sexual content, including lesbian acts, contained in the video, which in reality she does not.” Dupre was identified in media reports in March as the woman named “Kristen’ linked to “Client 9,” the frequent patron of a prostitution ring.Spitzer was the unnamed Client 9 cited in a federal affidavit against four suspected ringleaders of the online prostitution ring. Spitzer resigned on March 12 after the story appeared.

The jury will hear the statements a former mental patient accused of stalking Uma Thurman made to police. State Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro denied a defense motion to exclude the material, including a letter Jordan wrote to Thurman and e-mails he sent to her father, in which he expresses love for Thurman. The judge said the letter and the e-mails were “clearly relevant” to the charges and to whether Jordan made Thurman fearful. Thurman is expected to testify at Jordan’s trial in the Manhattan court. Jordan was arrested in October 2007 on misdemeanor charges of stalking and aggravated harassment. He was accused of following and trying to contact Thurman for more than two years.Prosecutors say Jordan, 37, once tried to get into Thurman’s trailer on a Manhattan movie set and appeared several times at her Greenwich Village home.”He also sent her a letter complaining that he had been confined to a mental hospital and was being forced to take medication, and he sent her father four e-mails expressing his love for her,” prosecutors said. While being questioned in Manhattan, Jordan told detectives that he saw Thurman on a movie theater screen and when their eyes met, he knew they had a connection, that their relationship was meant to be.Jordan’s lawyer, George Vomvolakis, tried to keep the statements out of the trial on the grounds that police illegally obtained them by promising Jordan he could go home as soon as he talked to them about Thurman. Vomvolakis also argued that if Carro allowed the letter in as evidence, “the jury might think they were doing a disservice to Ms. Thurman if they acquitted him. They would think this is a crazy man,” and that she could be in danger. Vomvolakis had said in January he hoped to avoid a trial and work out a plea deal in which Jordan, whom he said was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, would enter a psychiatric treatment program.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the woman linked to the sex scandal that forced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign is suing ‘Girls Gone Wild’ adult video founder Joe Francis for more than $10 million for the illegal use of her name and image. In the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Miami, Dupre contends that she was 17 and not old enough to sign a legally binding contract when she appeared partially nude in video footage filmed in 2003 by members of Francis’ Mantra Films production company in Miami Beach. On a spring break vacation at the time, Dupre was also drunk when she was told to sign a video “release” form, according to the complaint, which seeks damages in excess of $10 million from Francis and his co-defendants.”At the time of these events, plaintiff did not understand the magnitude of her actions nor that her image and likeness would be displayed in videos and DVDs produced and distributed by defendants,” the lawsuit says.”The defendants have profited from the filming, production and distribution and sale of the videos and DVDs,” it added.”Defendants created the false impression that plaintiff has endorsed and/or approves of the graphic sexual content, including lesbian acts, contained in the video, which in reality she does not.” Dupre was identified in media reports in March as the woman named “Kristen’ linked to “Client 9,” the frequent patron of a prostitution ring.Spitzer was the unnamed Client 9 cited in a federal affidavit against four suspected ringleaders of the online prostitution ring. Spitzer resigned on March 12 after the story appeared.

Amy Winehouse was released from police custody early Saturday morning after being arrested on suspicion of assault. After admitting to slapping a man earlier in the week, she received a caution and was not charged. Winehouse voluntarily walked into London’s Holborn Police Station to face interrogation about an incident early Wednesday morning. A man alleged that she hit him when he got in her way while she was playing pool at a bar. According to tabloid reports, the man said she also head-butted another patron, who was trying to hail her a cab. She was expected to be released Friday, but a doctor found her “unfit for interview,” it was reported, so she was held overnight and questioned in the morning. Winehouse’s spokesman Chris Goodman said she “admitted to a common assault by slapping a man with an open hand and accepted a caution.” The incident will remain on her record and it could count against her if she’s ever charged with a similar offense.On Friday, Winehouse’s husband, Blake Fielder-Civil appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court to face charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and inflicting grievous bodily harm. He had denied any wrongdoing, and when he appeared in court, Winehouse was not there. A June 2 trial date was set and Fielder-Civil will remain in police custody until the trial starts.Winehouse’s arrest is merely the latest in a string of legal troubles she’s faced over the last year. She and her husband were both arrested in the Norwegian city of Bergen back in October, on charges of drug possession, and Winehouse was arrested in London late last year on suspicion of attempting to interfere with her husband’s court case. Those charges were dropped in February.
