Beckhams’ New Life
Soccer great David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, arrived with their three children to begin their new life in Los Angeles, greeted by the familiar sight of reporters and photographers. Authorities set up barricades at Los Angeles International Airport as if the arrival of the soccer star and the Spice Girl was a red carpet premiere. The couple held hands as they walked out of a terminal shortly after arriving aboard a British Airways flight from London. The English midfielder, who helped Real Madrid win the Spanish title last month, will play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. An estimated 5,000 soccer enthusiasts, and new Beckham fans, sat in the stands as “Becks” was introduced and he held up his new No. 23 jersey. He will make his debut with the Galaxy in an exhibition match against a familiar opponent, Chelsea FC of the English Premier League, on July 21 in Carson, California. Beckham will make around $32.5 million over five years with the Galaxy and millions more in endorsement deals. Saying he wanted to help soccer grow in the United States, Beckham said, “I’m going to be part of that for the next five years and maybe a few years beyond that.” The Beckhams will make their new home in a reported $22 million, 13,000-square foot villa in Beverly Hills, where neighbors include their friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Beckham has said his focus would be on the soccer pitch and not on Hollywood glitz and their home in Beverly Hills.
